Vacuum Packaging Machine: Three Routes and How to Choose Between Them

Three technologies get the air out of a pack, and they are not variations of one machine. A chamber sealer, a vertical bag line and a tray skin line each remove air at a different point. Buying across that line is the mistake that surfaces months later, when the pack looks fine and the output does not.

Every vacuum packaging machine on the market is one of these three, and the gap between them is bigger than any brand comparison.

The Three Routes to an Airtight Pack

"Vacuum" names a result, not a machine, which is how a buyer ends up comparing two machines that share almost nothing.

Route 1: Chamber and Nozzle Sealers

A chamber sealer puts the open bag inside a closed box, evacuates the box so the bag collapses with it, then seals the mouth. A nozzle sealer (also called external or snorkel) pushes a tube into the bag and draws the air out through it. Both run on pre-made pouches placed by hand.

A chamber or nozzle vacuum packaging machine is a batch process: load, close, wait, open, unload. The operator sets the pace, not the machine. It holds up at a few hundred packs a day and becomes the constraint sooner than most buyers expect.

Route 2: Vertical Vacuum Bag Lines

This is the route we build. A vertical vacuum packaging machine differs from the first step. Film unwinds from a roll, a forming collar folds it into a tube, the back seam and bottom seal close, product drops in from above, the air is drawn out, and the top jaw seals and cuts. No pre-made pouches, nobody loading each one.

Because the machine makes the bag, pack geometry stays consistent in a way hand-loaded pouches rarely do. The route suits dry, free-flowing product: rice, beans, sugar, grains, nuts, coffee, chia, quinoa.

Most enquiries start with a chamber unit in mind, because that is what a web search returns. The real comparison is a continuous process against a batch one.

Route 3: Skin and Stretch Trays

A tray skin vacuum packaging machine forms a rigid tray, drops the product in, and lids it under vacuum or skin film. It is what sits behind most fresh meat and cheese displays. Different investment class, different conversation, and not a machine we build. It appears here because buyers confuse it with the other two.

Two of those rows describe machines we do not build. The vertical line is the only vacuum packaging machine in our range, and the rest of this page is about it.

Where the Air Leaves the Pack

Four stations do the work in a vertical vacuum packaging machine, and the one buyers forget about is the one that sets your output.

Film Pull and Forming

Film feeds off a roll and over a forming collar that folds it into a tube, leaving an open bag under the filler after the back seam and bottom cross seal close.

Two things go wrong here, both ordered before the machine arrives. Film structure matters more than thickness, and one chosen by micron gauge alone tends to disappoint. Roll size matters too, because the unwind has an outer diameter limit a cheap bulk roll can quietly exceed.

Dosing and Filling

Product is weighed and dropped from above, normally from a multihead weigher where accuracy and giveaway both come from. Free-flowing grains dose cleanly; oily or sticky blends do not, and they behave differently again once vacuum is applied.

The Vacuum Step

A pump pulls the air out of the formed, filled bag to a set level. This is where cycle time disappears, because a 2 kg bag holds far more air than a small pillow bag.

That one fact explains an output gap that looks wrong on paper. Our small-bag frame runs at 1,200 to 1,500 packs an hour; the brick frame at 60 to 150. Same technology, same air supply, and one is roughly eight to twenty-five times slower, depending on where you land in each range.

Sealing and Discharge

A pillow bag closes one back seam plus two cross seals. A brick pack uses a quad seal, four edges rather than three, which is what lets a 2 kg pack stand square and stack flat instead of slumping. Those extra seals take time, which is the second reason the brick frame runs slower.

Bag Width Decides the Frame

For a vacuum packaging machine for food such as rice, bag geometry, not budget, decides it. Width is the fastest number to check.

  • Up to about 200 mm wide, for rice, beans, sugar and similar small grains in pillow or gusseted form, the high-output small-bag frame is the right buy. Volume per shift is the pressure most buyers feel.

  • From roughly 200 to 250 mm, for chia, quinoa, nuts or coffee at 2 kg, the brick frame with a quad seal is the right buy. Only the quad seal holds the pack square and flat.

  • Wider than 250 mm, or a pack well beyond the 2 kg brick range, sits outside both frames. Ask us about a larger one.

Some products should not go near a vertical vacuum line at all:

  • Powders belong on a frame with an auger filler, sealed against dust.

  • Liquids, pastes and cooking oil belong on a four-side-seal sachet line built for them.

  • Anything fragile enough to break on the drop belongs on an inclined or horizontal machine.

Film: Structure Before Thickness

On a vacuum packaging machine that makes its own bag, film is closer to a machine setting than a consumable. Laminated structures with a barrier layer are the requirement, not the upgrade. Our small-bag frame runs OPP/CPP, OPP/CE, PET/PE and aluminium foil laminates. The brick frame runs OPP/CPP, PET/PE, BOPP/ALU/LDPE and NYLON/PE.

Single layer film vacuums down, looks right on the day, then lets oxygen back through in storage. Barrier is what makes the vacuum step worth paying for, and the cheapest place to lose the benefit.

Two more things belong on the film order: each frame has a hard outer diameter limit and a minimum core size, so a bulk roll can arrive unusable; and if your film carries registered print, say so early because it adds a constraint plain film does not have.

Air, Power, and Floor Load

Site requirements are where vacuum packaging machine projects slip, because nobody checks them while the machine is still on a boat.

  • Compressed air: both frames want 0.8 MPa. A compressor that cannot hold it gives you drifting vacuum depth and packs that leave the line looking sealed and arrive soft.

  • Power: 8.5 kW on the small-bag frame, 5.5 kW on the brick frame. Single or three phase has to be settled before the machine ships.

  • Weight: 765 kg and 1,050 kg. Fine on a ground slab, worth a call to your landlord on a mezzanine.

  • Changeover: with four SKUs, the minutes between them shape your real daily output more than the rated speed does.

What a Quote Should Put in Writing

Nobody can price a vacuum packaging machine honestly off a page. The figure moves with bag format, film structure, dosing method and daily target. Ask any supplier, us included, to commit these in writing:

  • Rated output at your fill weight, not the fastest bag the frame can run

  • The film structure and roll dimensions the price assumes

  • Dosing method and the accuracy quoted with it

  • Installation, commissioning and operator training, and who pays travel

  • Warranty term in writing, plus spare parts lead times

  • A factory test running your film and your product, with video

A quote that arrives as one figure and a model number is a guess, and guesses get renegotiated after you have signed.

Faults That Trace Back to the Quote

Nearly every complaint in month three was decided before delivery: an undersized compressor, a film roll ordered before anyone checked the diameter limit, barrier specified by thickness, a production plan built around the small-bag number when half the output is bricks, single phase power assumed, a product blend changed after commissioning that behaves differently in both the filler and the vacuum stage.

All of these are cheap to fix on paper and expensive to fix on site.

FAQs

Chamber or Vertical Line: Which One Do I Need?

Pick a chamber sealer for mixed small batches, wet or marinated product, or anything that changes shape every hour. Pick a vertical line for dry, free-flowing product in one or two bag sizes with output paced by the machine. The boundary is throughput, not money.

How Is a Brick-Shaped Vacuum Pack Made?

A quad seal closes four edges instead of one back seam plus two cross seals on a pillow bag. Together with the vacuum step pulling film tight against the product, that gives a pack which stands square and stacks flat. It also costs cycle time.

Can Liquids or Sauces Run on This Line?

No. Free liquid near a vacuum stage causes trouble for the pump and for seal quality. Liquids, pastes and cooking oil belong on a four-side-seal sachet line designed for them, and we will say so at quote stage rather than after.

How Much Longer Does Vacuum Keep Food Fresh?

There is no general multiple, and anyone who quotes one is guessing. Shelf life depends on the product, the film's barrier structure and your storage temperature together. Vacuum slows oxidation and freezer burn. It does not stop either, and it is not a substitute for a cold chain.
